Preparing Financially to Become a Stay At Home Mom
76
Having children is one of the biggest changes an adult can make. Many mothers want to stay at home with their children for awhile or even forever. Whatever you decide, if you want to become a stay at home mom (SAHM) you need to prepare financially.
It would not hurt to plan to be a SAHM mom long before you are even pregnant. Many times though, people aren't thinking along those lines. At the very least start planning as soon as you find out you are expecting. Take a close look at your income and your expenses. You need to figure out if it is even realistic for you to stay at home with the kids. If you are barely getting by on two incomes then it will take some work to reduce your expenses to fit within one income only. But it can certainly be done. If not right away, you can at least work towards it with your goal in mind and you will succeed eventually.
Ideally, you should try to live on your spouse's income only for a few months before the baby is born. This will show you whether it is possible or not AND pad your savings account to help cover emergencies. If you can do this then you can certainly stay home with your kids. Many times it isn't possible right away and then you need to find ways to trim your budget.
Take a hard look at your expenses each month and see what you can drop. Decide what is really necessary and get rid of what isn't. If you have a lot of debt it is time to pay it off as quickly as possible. The less money you owe other people each month the more freedom your family has. If you work hard throughout your pregnancy then you could even pay off some items before the baby comes, which could mean staying at home is more realistic than you thought.
Start trying to find the best deals at the store and don't buy unnecessary items. Play the drug store game and shop the loss leaders at the grocery store. If you are not already doing this you will be amazed at how much money you save. Start stockpiling diapers and wipes now when you can hunt for bargains. Get a good supply saved up before the baby comes and you won't have to worry about buying diapers for awhile.
Staying at home with my kids was a dream of ours before we even got married. I wasn't able to stay at home full time right away, but was able to drop down to just 20 hours a week. This transition period allowed us to get on better financial footing and it only took a year and a half before I was able to stay at home full time with my son. It doesn't have to be all or nothing. If staying at home with your children is what your family wants, it can be done. It will take some work and refiguring the budget, but you can make it happen. Maybe not overnight, but eventually. Good luck!

We had five kids. There was NO way we could afford me staying home. I did miss a lot but they would have been with out a lot if I had stayed at home.
Great tips.
I became a licensed baby-sitter so I could stay with my children. I'm not sure it was so good for them. I had five, so I couldn't afford to go to work...it would have cost me more in childcare than I would make. The ability to SAH is a worthy goal.

I have always wanted to be a stay at home mom. We don't have kids yet, and I work full time right now, but I think we are going to try to live off just my husbands income in the near future to see if we could do it. Thanks for the great tips!
I stayed at home for the first five and we just about managed. Then I worked during the school hours.
Great hub. It is really nice if moms can stay at home and take care of their kids while they earn some money.
I stayed at home with my children until the youngest one started school. You are absolutely right about planning. It has become a financial burden for many families to have to live on only one paycheck, but , for many families, it is well worth it. Great hub.

Great hub! I wish I had these tips before I had my children, it would have made things easier. I did little to no planning to stay at home with my children but luckily we were able to pull it off and any sacrifices we made were well worth it.
I can contribute to these comments. To all that can make it happen, being @ home with your children is great and rewarding. Im a single parent of four wonderful successful children, and I also count us as an exception. We did good!!!
Terrific article - thanks for the tips!
Good luck I hope things work out on your quest to be SAHM!
I stay at home with 5 kids and we are barely making it, so now I am looking into jobs I can do from home so I can continue to be with them at least for til they're all a bit older. Thanks for the tips.
Thanks for the great article as parts resonate with me as I am in the throws of trying out (via an unpaid leave of absence from my job-my choice)being a SAHM. I have fallen in love with my new role!
Well done! When a mom does work, there are so many expenses and more taxed income until she may do almost as well to stay home . Working from home makes sense, especially with having preschoolers needing daycare if the mom works.

I stayed at home with my kids when I could and worked part-time the rest of the time. I think it is important for the Mom to have that time with her children if she can. Many just can't.
